What Is an AEO Checklist?

An AEO checklist is a structured audit that scores your content's readiness to be cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Instead of guessing what might improve your AI visibility, you work through a defined list of factors that research and testing have shown influence citation rates, fix the misses, and re-check.

This checklist covers five dimensions in priority order: technical access, content structure, schema markup, authority signals, and measurement. Each dimension gates the next. There's no point perfecting your schema if an AI crawler can't access your page. There's no point optimizing content structure if your content isn't authoritative enough to be cited.

How to use this checklist

Pick your 10 highest-priority pages (pillar pages and top traffic pages). Score each page against all 40 points. Pages scoring below 25: fix the technical and schema dimensions first. Dimension 1: Technical Access (8 Points)

Technical access issues are the most catastrophic single-point failures. A page blocked to GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot makes all content and schema optimization irrelevant. Fix these first, always.

  1. robots.txt does not block AI crawlers. Ensure GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are all allowed in your robots.txt. Blocking any of these makes your content invisible to that engine's live retrieval layer.

  2. Site is indexed in Bing. ChatGPT Search uses Bing's index, not Google's. Perplexity's initial retrieval layer also leans on Bing. Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools and verify your priority pages are indexed.

  3. No paywall or login gate on key content. AI crawlers can't authenticate. If your key content is behind a paywall or login, it's invisible to AI engines. Make your priority content publicly accessible.

  4. Core Web Vitals pass. LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 (75th percentile, mobile). Slow pages are harder for AI crawlers to access reliably and may be deprioritized in retrieval.

  5. HTML is the primary delivery method. Content must be server-side rendered or statically generated, not hidden behind client-side JavaScript. AI crawlers often can't execute JavaScript. If your content requires JS to load, it's invisible.

  6. Canonical URLs are properly set. No duplicate content confusion. If multiple versions of the same page exist (www vs non-www, http vs https, trailing slash variations), AI engines can't determine which version to cite.

  7. Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Both indexes matter. Google for AI Overviews, Bing for ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.

  8. No aggressive anti-bot protection on content pages. Cloudflare challenges, CAPTCHAs, and aggressive bot protection can block AI crawlers. Whitelist GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot.

Dimension 2: Content Structure (10 Points)

Once your content is accessible, structure determines whether AI engines can extract and cite it. This is where most pages fail.

  1. Direct answer in the first 100 words. 72.4% of ChatGPT citations have this pattern (Wix Studio, Kevin Indig, 2026). Lead with a 40 to 60 word answer capsule that directly addresses the question. Then expand with context below.

  2. Question-based H2 and H3 headings. Match real buyer prompts, not keyword fragments. AI engines extract information in question-answer pairs. Use the exact question as a heading and provide the answer in the immediately following paragraph.

  6. Content covers follow-up questions on the same page. One page should answer the question cluster, not just the single question. AI engines perform query fanout, breaking prompts into 2 to 5 sub-queries. Full coverage increases your chances of appearing in multiple sub-query results.

  7. Specific numbers, dates, and cited sources. Support claims with concrete data. AI engines favor content with specific, verifiable facts over vague generalizations. Cite your sources with links.

  8. Content is under 3 months old or recently updated. Content under three months old is roughly 3 times more likely to be cited than content left untouched for two years (RankSenseAI, 2026). Refresh priority pages every 3 to 6 months.

  9. No JavaScript-rendered content blocks. All key content must be in the HTML source, not loaded via JavaScript after page render. Test by viewing the page source and confirming your content is present.

  10. Clean heading hierarchy. One H1 per page, H2s for main sections, H3s for subsections. No skipped levels. AI engines use heading hierarchy to understand content structure.

Dimension 3: Schema Markup (7 Points)

Schema helps AI engines understand what your content is about, what entities it references, and how information relates.   2. FAQPage schema on FAQ sections. Explicitly tells AI engines "this section is a question and this is the answer." Maps directly to how AI engines extract content for synthesis.

  3. Organization schema on homepage and about page. Include name, url, logo, sameAs (linking to brand profiles), foundingDate, and founder. This is the entity data that builds knowledge graph presence.

  4. Person schema with sameAs on author bylines. Ties content to real human entities. Include name, jobTitle, sameAs (LinkedIn, Twitter, personal site), and worksFor. AI engines weight authored content higher than anonymous content.

  5. HowTo schema on process content. Structures step-by-step instructions in machine-readable format. Use for content that answers "how to" questions.

  6. Schema validates in Google's Rich Results Test. Invalid schema is worse than no schema. Validate every page and fix any errors or warnings.

Dimension 4: Authority Signals (8 Points)

AI engines favor sources that demonstrate expertise, are corroborated by third parties, and have strong entity associations. Authority is built over time, not overnight.

  1. Author bylines with credentials and bios. Include author name, title, and a link to a detailed bio that establishes expertise. AI engines weight authored content higher than anonymous content.

  2. Original data or proprietary statistics on the page. Pages with at least one original, citable statistic earn an estimated 3x lift in AI citation frequency (Presenc AI, 2026). This is the single most defensible citation asset.

  3. Third-party mentions on authoritative sites. Branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands). Earn mentions on Wikipedia, Reddit, G2, editorial press, and industry publications.

  4. Consistent brand entity across the web. Same name, description, and details everywhere your brand appears. Build or update your Wikidata entry. Ensure NAP consistency across directories.

  5. Topical authority through content clusters. Pillar pages covering topics broadly, supported by cluster content diving into subtopics, interlinked. AI engines favor sources with deep expertise on a topic.

  6. Content cited or referenced by other sources. When other sites reference your content, it signals to AI engines that you're an authority. Build the kind of content other sites want to reference: original research, definitive guides, expert quotes.

  7. Active presence on platforms AI engines use as sources. Reddit, YouTube, G2, Capterra, industry forums. AI engines pull from these sources for entity information and corroboration.

  8. Brand mentioned unprompted in AI answers for relevant topics. When users ask about concepts related to your niche, does the AI mention your brand? This measures entity association strength. If not, build entity presence through consistent third-party mentions.

Dimension 5: Measurement (7 Points)

  1. Baseline citation rate established. Run 20 target queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Record whether your domain is cited. Calculate your citation rate. This is your starting point.

  2. Weekly citation tracking for top 20 queries. Run your top 20 queries weekly across all major AI engines. Log results in a spreadsheet: query, engine, date, cited (Y/N), cited URL, competitor cited, notes.

  3. Monthly citation tracking for full query set. Run your full 30 to 40 query set monthly. Track the trend over 6 to 12 months. Single-month snapshots are noisy.

  4. Share of voice calculated against competitors. Among all citations for your target queries, what percentage goes to you vs competitors? This is the metric clients understand intuitively.

  5. Mention rate tracked separately from citation rate. Visibility (mentioned) and citation (linked) are different numbers. The gap between them tells you whether you have a brand problem or a structure problem.

How to Prioritize Your Fixes

Don't try to fix everything at once. Work through the dimensions in order:
